About checkappnames
checkappnames is an independent tool that helps app founders and developers check whether a name is already taken across the Apple App Store and Google Play before they commit to a brand.
Who runs this
checkappnames is built and operated by Ugur Seker, an independent software developer based in Türkiye. It is a small, self-funded project rather than a large company, which means one person is responsible for the tool, its accuracy, and the content on this site. If you have a question or spot something wrong, you can reach me directly at contact@checkappnames.com.
Why this tool exists
Naming an app is one of the earliest decisions a team makes, and one of the most expensive to get wrong. A name that looks free in your home country can already be taken in Germany, Japan, or Brazil, because the App Store treats every country as its own catalog. By the time a conflict surfaces, the name is usually baked into the icon, screenshots, landing page, and months of keyword history.
I built checkappnames after running into exactly this problem: checking a name storefront by storefront, by hand, is slow and easy to get wrong. The goal here is simple — give founders a fast, honest read on how crowded a name already is, across the markets that actually matter, before they invest in a brand.
How the check works
For the App Store, checkappnames queries Apple’s public iTunes Search API across 43 storefronts. For Android, it searches Google Play. Every result is then compared against the name you entered in two ways: an exact match after the text is normalized (so differences in capitalization, spacing, accents, and punctuation cannot hide a real conflict), and a similarity check that measures how much wording two titles share, so reworded or reordered variants are flagged as possible matches.
Results are grouped by storefront and labelled as found (an exact match exists), possible match (a close variant worth reviewing), or not found. This lets you separate conflicts in your launch markets from noise in countries you will never enter.
What this tool is not
checkappnames is a practical availability signal, not a legal service. A clean result tells you a name is not obviously used by a live app right now; it does not confirm that the name is free of trademarks. Trademark rights are registered per class of goods and services and per country, so a name can be unused in the stores and still legally protected. For anything high-stakes, treat the store check as a first filter and confirm legal availability with a qualified trademark professional.
Store data can also lag behind reality by a short window, so a final manual review of your most important markets is always worth the few minutes it takes.
How it is funded
A quick check of a few priority countries is free. A full scan — all 43 App Store storefronts plus Google Play in one pass — is a one-time purchase, processed securely by Paddle, with no subscription. This keeps the tool sustainable to run while letting you try it before paying. Full pricing is on the pricing page.
