How the app name check works

When you enter a name, checkappnames looks it up in live storefront listings and compares every result against what you typed. It reports two kinds of overlap. An exact match means an existing title is identical once the text is normalized for capitalization, spacing, accents, and punctuation, so “Cafe Mate” is measured fairly against “CafeMate” and “Café-Mate”. A possible match means another title shares most of its wording with yours — the kind of close variant a single search box usually misses but that can still split your brand traffic.

The exact rules — every normalization step, the threshold that separates the two kinds of match, and the cases where a result is wrong — are documented on the methodology page.

Why country coverage matters

App Store availability is a per-country answer, not a global one. Each storefront is effectively its own catalog, so a name can be wide open in the United States and already claimed in Germany, Japan, or Brazil. The free check reads a few priority markets for a fast first signal; a full scan covers all 44 App Store storefronts plus Google Play in one pass, so you can weigh a conflict by where your users and revenue will actually come from before you commit to branding.

Availability is not legal clearance

A clean result is a strong early signal, not a guarantee. It tells you a name is not obviously used by a live app right now, but it does not confirm the name is free of trademarks — those are registered per class and per country and sit outside what any store search can see. Use the scan to filter out obvious conflicts, then confirm anything high-stakes with a trademark professional. New guides on checking if a name is taken and trademark risk walk through the full workflow.
